"The Flower of May", refers to the May 1980 Democratic Uprising in Gwangju in which mass demonstrations against the authoritarian state were repressed by government soldiers. The special exhibition to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the uprising, has been organized by Gwangju Biennale Foundation and Gwangju Museum of Art as a festival, separate from the Biennale, that engages the public and contemporary art world through a major exhibition, performance, and series of panel discussions.
Rather than focusing on empirically witnessing the historical facts, or drawing a historical lesson from them, "The Flower of May" instead serves to provide a platform for surveying the our understanding of history and its evolution in the past thirty years. The exhibition will serve as a platform for visual culture in situ, by showcasing the diversity of expression in the era of globalization in a way that actively engages the greater public.
The artists on view all share a particular emphasis on art as social practice, focusing on active discourse with the public and a continual investigation of the ideas communicated by contemporary aesthetic products. In part, this is also to demonstrate an archipelago of aesthetics that is revealed not through typology of, or concentration on, a particular theme, but instead by a set of diverse themes with common bonds.

Baptist Coelho
“Beneath it all… I am human…”
(video, 11:05 min, 2009)
Baptist Coelho was born in India and received his Masters of Arts at Birmingham Institute of Art & Design UK, He had solo exhibition called air(edge)air(2006 BIAD Gallery, UK), "You can’t afford to have emotions out there…" (2009. New Delhi. Mumbai). In 2008, he was a Guest Editor of New Media Art for "I" (India Habitat Centre). Since 2008, the workshop-based, site-specific, mixed-media installation and performance with participating schools in Mumbai, Ladakh, Switzerland and Thailand. And He has participated exhibitions which include: the Devi Art Foundation, Gurgaon; HEART Herning Kunstmuseum of Contemporary Art, Denmark and Gwangju National Museum, South Korea.
"Beneath it all… I am human…" illustrates a Siachen soldier’s clothing being systematically and mysteriously removed to reveal his bare body. The act reminds us that beneath the layers of protective gear there exists the human form; an inner layer that is vulnerable. The meticulous unzipping and unbuttoning is reminiscent of the laborious task that each soldier endures daily; in a climate where the brutal weather conditions are life-threatening. During the process of undressing, details of the soldier’s body are exposed and this simple act expresses a sense of liberation from the conflict and his identity as a soldier. These contrasts are not without peril; as an exposed body would soon perish in the cold.
Rainer Ganahl
Bicycling from Karl-Marx-Allee through the Brandenburger
Gate – Meditating Berlin 1989 (video, 13 min, 2007)
Rainer Ganahl was accidentally born in Austria in 1967 and has been living in New York since 1990 as Austrian and American citizen. His artistic work often deals with educational, political, ecological and linguistic issues. He studies foreign languages, reads books with people and rides bicycles in a crazy manner. He dreams frequently, loves his girlfriend Romana and wants to study and work in China. He uses andabuses all media without any preference, including video, ceramics, broken hearts, money, paintings, misspellings and accidents. His recent activities include one person shows at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart in 2007 and at the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna in 2005. He exhibited his work at the Seville 2006, Bucharest 2006, Moscow 2007, and Venice ( 1999, 2005, 2007) biennials.
The artist rides against the traffic without holding the handlebar on a very poor bike. He goes from the east side of the city, it means from a repressive state supposedly inspired by Marx, against the grain, against rules and laws, against the flow and walls, towards the west. One could see this work as a humoristic act of liberation and a personal reflection on freedom where lightness and non-sense are opposed to the grandness of the past history. The division between the East and the West and between two ideologies, Marxism and Capitalism that can easily bring to mind Korea present situation.

That Place 2
(digital print & light boxes, 2010)
‘That Place’ is a concept of work that records the place, space and time through people. That place shows an aspect of past, present and future all of which are included in the concept of people, place and time. People speak of space and time, space exists because of people and time, and time is considered by people and space. I separately filmed a civilian with the backdrop of the former provincial government building, the main stage of May 18 Democratic Uprising and a soldier with the military corps who suppressed the demonstrating crowd. The civilian and the soldier being modeled, carry a red card with a date and time.
Language an Action!
(window installation, 2010)
“I would say that my job is to try to think and see in the social pathological prospective by listing and suggesting my very private interests. He defines his philosophy as above. There is this process of transferring an individual’s interests into the area of social context and perspective, fun to be had by participating in that process and lastly the sympathy aroused by the fun. Only through the fun the work of an artist can develop from an audience-less monologue to an interactive communication. Some communication about a certain message can do as much as lessening misunderstandings but complete understanding is still impossible to be achieved. Some of the messages are interpreted incompletely and arbitrarily, even distorted beyond recognition. People want to keep communicating about things that are not clear nevertheless(Myunghoon Lee- Independent curator)
Moonho Ma
Drift-Longing
(plastic wrapping & mixed media, 2010)
Moonho Ma was born in Gangjin and graduated from Dept. of Western Painting, Chugye University for the Arts. He had solo exhibition Downstream(2004,Kumho Art Museum, Seoul·Lotte Gallery, Gwangju), Shadow(2007.Gwangju Shinsegae Gallery) and Longing(2008, Gwangju Lotte Gallery). And he has participated in the Exhibition of the 7th Gwangju Biennale-Proposal: House Agent Project(2008,Daein Market), Soup Rice Exhibition(2008, Damyang Soup Rice Restaurant), Seeking New Vision of Daegu·GwangjuIII(2006, Daegu, Gwangju Shinsegae Gallery), Northern Branch - Shadow (2005, Gwangju Lotte Gallery).
By tracking the journey of life, this installation represents the desire and passion people are capable of possessing, thus the ordinary and mundane nature of life.
Drifting and settling down as a way of common life and then wounds, healing, and finally suture. Just like any other day, the day in May receives another generation after seeing off one. As our daily life keeps circling, biting its tail the word homecoming drifts away like garbage on the street and the indifferent people stay indifferent…
Caecilia Tripp
Spring in Gwangju
(video, 10 min, 2008)
The mostly filmic installation work of Caecilia Tripp is based on what Edouard Glissant calls Poetic of Relations. It is linked to the processes of creolization at the crossroad of cultural and social boundaries. Using strategies of the trickster it deals with the different notions of dwelling: places, language and imaginaries; inventing new language and cultural codes, opening up spaces of utopia and transgression in their specific contexts. Her work has been shown at venues such as CAC (Contemporary Arts Center) New Orleans, 7th Gwangju Biennale, PS1 NY, Palais de Tokyo and Museum of Modern Art in Paris. Her films have been shown at international filmfestivals such as Mostra Venise, Cannes Filmfestival, New York Urban Filmfestival, Ghana Real Life Filmfestival, BAM Theatre NY.
"Spring in Gwangju" documents the procession curated by Claire Tancons for the 7th Gwangju Biennale, and recalls the emancipatory energy of the South Korean Spring in May 1980. However, the references of Spring go well beyond Gwangju, and evoke other popular uprisings from the Canboulay Riots of 1881 in Port of Spain to May 1968 in Paris, as well as encompassing the history of Carnival street processions, especially as found in Brazil and the Caribbean, New Orleans, and Cape Town. Given its format as a street procession, and its location, Gwangju, the attention of the invited artists will be drawn to the May 1980 street uprisings in Gwangju. Spring calls to mind the idea of sudden motion and constant tension, both of which are at the core of popular street manifestations, from carnivals to demonstrations.
